Amahl & the Night Visitors

Gian-Carlo Menotti

Sunday, December 3 at 2:30pm

Opera Idaho’s production of Gian-Carlo Menotti’s one-act opera returns to The Egyptian Theatre for two holiday performances. The opera was commissioned by NBC and first performed by the NBC Opera Theatre on December 24, 1951, in New York City at NBC studio 8H in Rockefeller Center, the same studio where it was broadcast live on television from that venue as the debut production of the Hallmark Hall of Fame. It has since become a holiday staple for families, the single most-performed American opera, and one of the most performed of all operas.

The story tells of the night the Three Kings, following the star of Bethlehem, stop for shelter at the home of Amahl, a poor shepherd boy with a disability who lives with his widowed mother. Through their encounters with the Three Kings and a magic star, Amahl and his mother learn how unselfish love and good deeds can work miracles. Opera Idaho’s production, directed by General Director Mark Junkert, was first performed in 2010.
